Duration of the project: November 7, 2016 - November 6, 2018.

 (3) An international research project:

"Paradigm shift in early teaching: constructivism and developmental approach vs. behavioristic strategies", project no.: INGI-2105-29.

A brief description of the project:

On behalf of the UNESCO Chair, dr Urszula Markowska-Manista takes part in the research project: "Paradigm shift in early teaching: constructivism and developmental approach vs. behavioristic strategies".

The Josip Juraj Strssmayer University of Osijek, Faculty of Education in Osijek Croatia is the applicant, while partners include: a researcher from z Teachers College University of Columbia, USA as well as a researcher from The UNESCO Janusz Korczak Chair, The Maria Grzegorzewska University.

Child-centered orientation, as well as the strengthening of social awareness on the rights of children, significantly affected the dominance of constructivism in the context of early childhood learning. The basis of this approach is a child who with his developmental potential is building a picture of himself and his surroundings. Major teaching strategies within constructivism are heuristic questions and interpretations. On the other hand, under the influence of constructivism and development perspective, behavioral strategies have implicitly receive a negative connotation, and consequently early teaching using directive strategies is being abandon. It is therefore important to determine the foundation of the application of behavioral strategies in relation to the long-term effects of teaching in order to gain insight into the developmental appropriateness of selected methods of teaching.

Main goals:

The purpose of research is to find out what are the developmental effects of constructivism and behaviorism in the context of teaching young children.

The goal is twofold:

1) translation and validation of the measuring instrument "Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3rd ed." (ASQ-3), from authors Brickner and Squires (2009), which defines the developmental skills of preschool children. For using the measuring instrument is obtained the consent of the authors.

2) to determine whether the application of behavioral strategies (directive teaching methods) results in better developmental progress in pre-school children in relation to the application of constructivistic teaching methods.

“Polnisch – Deutsche wissenschaftliche Dialoge über Kinderrechte, Janusz Korczak und Migration / Polish- German academic dialogues about children’s rights, Janusz Korczak and migration”, project no.: 2016-17.

A brief description of the project:

The project “Polnisch – Deutsche wissenschaftliche Dialoge über Kinderrechte, Janusz Korczak und Migration / Polish- German academic dialogues about children’s rights, Janusz Korczak and migration”, no. 2016-17 received funding of the Polish-German Foundation for Science/ Deutsch-Polnische Wissenschaftsstiftung for the years 2016 i 2017.

The project will be realized by Janusz Korczak UNESCO Chair at the Maria Grzegorzewska University (project coordinator: dr Urszula Markowska-Manista) in cooperation with a German partner from Internationale Akademie Berlin für innovative Pädagogik, Psychologie und Ökonomie (INA) Berlin (the person responsible for cooperation on the German side: prof. Manfred Liebel).

The aim of the project is an exchange of scientific and practical experiences in the field of popularization of science and in a research area applied between the subjects from Poland (the Maria Grzegorzewska University) and Germany (Internationale Akademie Berlin für innovative Pädagogik INA gGmBH) and within this area to publish a scientific book in Polish.

Duration of the project: May 2016 –2017

Place: The Maria Grzegorzewska University in Warsaw

Realizing unit: The UNESCO Chair at The Maria Grzegorzewska University

Coordinator: dr Urszula Markowska-Manista

Contact: umarkowska@aps.edu.pl

Elements of the project:

(1) The seminar on the rights of the child

This seminar was organized for the students of the Maria Grzegorzewska Pedagogical University whose guest was prof. Manfred Liebel from Internationale Akademie Berlin für Innovative Pädagogik, Psychologie und Ökonomie (INA) Berlin.

The aim of the seminar, which consisted of lectures, discussion and work in small thematic groups, was to analyse migrant children’s situation and rights in three areas: education, children’s rights and discrimination as well as a reference to the concept of “resilience” and Janusz Korczak’s pedagogical approach. These analyses – of an important group, i.e. students – will be used as a theoretical addition and a foundation for the realization of the main project, i.e. preparation of scientific texts and their publication in Polish in the form of a Polish-German scholarly monograph.

(2) The Polish-German scientific monograph

Manfred Liebel, Urszula Markowska-Manista,  Prawa dziecka w kontekście międzykulturowości. Janusz Korczak na nowo odczytywany (Children's rights in the context of interculturalism. Janusz Korczak revisited), Wyd. Akademii Pedagogiki Specjalnej, Warsaw 2017, 240 pages, ISBN 978-83-64953-68-2

Book cover
From scientific review by prof. Ewa Jarosz:
"Children’s rights in the context of interculturalism. Janusz Korczak revisited is an exceptional book due to its innovative concept of fitting Korczak’s thought and ideas into the discourse on childhood through the prism of selected aspects of multiculturalism. (...) Through the texts presented in this volume, Manfred Liebel and Urszula Markowska-Manista show that original and interesting reflections on the sense and topicality of Korczak’s life stance, his attitude towards children and their place in society are possible; that in their brilliance, Korczak’s inexhaustibly rich ideas are applicable in a multidimensional reality, in multiple situations, in various eras, cultures and problems, including dramatic phenomena."
Book presentations:
  1. Intercultural workshops: September 5th 2017; within the 11th International Summer School: "International experiences in the area of refugee and migrant children's adaptation - theory, research, praxis" organization,
  2. Rights of children “out of place” workshops: September 14th 2017; within the International Congress on Children's Rights - the 8. International Korczak Conference entitled: „The Open Window – A sense of freedom”.
