Retrospective on 18th UNESCO Chair International Summer School 2025 and the Young Researchers’ Mid- term Conference of Sociology of Education Network (European Sociological Association)

The summer school was attended by 22 external participants from Turkey, Vietnam, Canada, USA, Germany, Georgia, as well as 4 fellows of the Polish UNESCO Committee (PKU NAWA) from Ukraine, Albania, and Haiti, along with participants from Polish institutions such as the University of Warsaw, KEN, and PAS. The summer school program included a series of workshops disseminating the results of the EDUCATORE project, related to wellbeing and resilience in the education and social support sectors. Training was provided not only to the summer school participants but also to APS staff, students, and doctoral candidates.

The EDUCATORE workshops were prepared and conducted by Anna Odrowąż-Coates, Cecilia M. Zsogon, Ewa Odrowąż-Coates, Gabriela Doman, and Ewa Dąbrowa.

Doctoral candidates from APS were engaged in the organization of the summer school: Ewa Duda-Maciejewska (2nd year), Patrycja Mika (2nd year), and Magdalena Pietrzak (2nd year). Student volunteers included Ewa Odrowąż-Coates and Gabriela Doman (2nd year of physiotherapy).

Participants had the opportunity to learn about Warsaw and its history, visit historical and cultural sites of the capital, go up to the top of the Palace of Culture and Science, and take part in a group walk “In Korczak’s Footsteps” through Warsaw.

Over three days, a series of methodological workshops took place. These were conducted by, among others, Dr. Magdalena Lemańczyk from PAS, Prof. Beata Nessel-Łukasik, Dr. Tatiana Kanasz, and Dr. Jarosław Janowski. Additionally, individual master consultations were held with professors from Albania, Greece, and Canada.

A particularly noteworthy element was the exceptionally professional preparation of the lecture and workshop entitled From Stress to Wellness: Physiotherapy Tools for Relaxation and Resilience, which was received with great enthusiasm by participants. The workshop was prepared and conducted by 2nd-year physiotherapy students from APS.

The summer school concluded with an international scientific conference from the series Young Researchers’ Academy of PTP. This year, it was held under the auspices of the European Sociological Association, which co-funded the conference catering.

ESA RN10 Mid-term conference: “Young Researchers Academy for Methodological Advancements in Sociological Research and Education: Resilience and Well-being in Academic Endeavours.”

Seventy-five active participants presented papers on site. Three participants, unable to arrive in Warsaw on time due to flight disruptions caused by drone activity over Europe, sent in video presentations.

The conference was also attended by around 30 passive listeners from various Warsaw institutions and APS. Among the speakers and passive participants were 17 researchers from ESA networks and 11 members of ESA RN10. The opening lecture was delivered by Prof. Urszula Markowska-Manista (University of Warsaw), and the closing lecture by Prof. Tsiknakou Eleni (ESA RN10, Greece).

Institutional partners included the Institute of Political Studies PAS, IKA, ESA, PTP Warsaw Branch, and the APS Doctoral Council. 

The plenary sessions were recorded and are awaiting post-production and authorization from the speakers. A publication in the UNESCO Chair series is planned for March 2026.

An added value of the event was the signing of a tripartite agreement between three associations promoting the ideas of Korczak: the International Korczak Association, the Polish Janusz Korczak Association, and the Foundation of Polish Banks.

The events were accompanied by a special exhibition in the APS Gallery by Barbra Janina Sochal – Relations. In Praise of Indiscretion.
